Tapeworm treatment: when to book your vet visit

The quick answer

A pet dog traveling from the US must receive tapeworm treatment from a USDA Accredited Veterinarian between 24 and 120 hours before entering Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).[1][3] APHA's carrier guidance measures the window against the expected arrival time in Great Britain.[2]

Red Tape Travel covers the wider journey on its US to Great Britain dog route page. This guide covers the tapeworm treatment and its record, leaving other US export and Great Britain entry requirements to that route page.

Arrange treatment against arrival in Great Britain

For a dog traveling from the US to Great Britain, USDA APHIS requires veterinary administration and a completed treatment record.[1]

  1. Book the treatment appointment

Arrange for a USDA Accredited Veterinarian to administer the treatment between 24 and 120 hours before the dog enters Great Britain.[1][3] Use the expected arrival time in Great Britain when discussing the appointment with the vet, as APHA's carrier guidance specifies.[2]

Fails if: the treatment does not meet the stated window, subject to the carrier guidance's conditional journey exception below.[1][2]

  2. Check the medication

Have the vet use medication labeled as effective against Echinococcus multilocularis.[1] APHIS recommends praziquantel as the active ingredient.[1]

Fails if: the medication does not meet the stated effectiveness requirement.[1]

  3. Complete the treatment record

Have the administering vet complete the tapeworm-treatment table in the health certificate with the medication's brand name and manufacturer, the treatment date and time, and the vet's signature and printed name.[1] APHA also requires the vet's name, stamp and signature on the treatment entry.[2]

Fails if: the treatment entry is missing required details.[1][2]

The treatment appointment and certificate endorsement are separate. For a dog traveling from the US to Great Britain, APHIS allows tapeworm treatment before or after endorsement of the health certificate.[1] The administering vet cannot sign the treatment table until the medication has been administered.[1]

Check the direct-origin exemptions

APHA exempts dogs traveling directly to Great Britain from Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Finland, Malta or Norway from tapeworm treatment.[2] A dog traveling from the US is outside that direct-origin exemption list.[2]

Red Tape Travel's Great Britain rules page places the treatment requirement within the destination's import sequence. The exemptions above concern direct travel from the named places; they do not state an exemption for a US-origin journey merely because it has a connection there.[2]

If the journey is delayed

APHA's carrier guidance includes a conditional travel exception when the upper treatment limit is exceeded during the journey or while waiting to board.[2] It says the dog is allowed to travel but must not leave the transport or travel crate after check-in.[2] This is the carrier guidance's stated condition, not a general extension to the treatment window.[2]
