Privacy and cookies

Red Tape Travel has no accounts, no ads and no forms that collect personal details. Here is who runs it, everything it measures, and who receives that data.

Who runs this site

Red Tape Travel is a GeoVector project. GeoVector runs this site and decides what it measures.

Page views, without cookies

Vercel Web Analytics counts page views and where visitors came from. We use it to see which pages are read and which sites send visitors, such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. It sets no cookies. The site is hosted on Vercel, which also keeps standard request logs. On the plan this site uses, Vercel keeps Web Analytics reports for at least 12 months and its request logs for at least a day. Its privacy notice, linked below, covers any other records it keeps.

Google Analytics, only if you agree

If you say yes, Google Analytics sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_T243DE9X7G, which last up to two years. It reports the pages you view, the site you came from, your approximate location, and your device and browser. We use it to count visits. Google processes this data and may do so outside the UK and EU.

Google Analytics keeps individual events for 2 months, and data tied to your browser’s identifier for up to 14 months after you last visit. Its standard reports are totals that do not identify you.

If you say no, or have not answered, Google’s code is not loaded and no analytics cookies are set. Turning it off removes the cookies it set.

Your choice is saved in this browser’s local storage, not in a cookie. It stays there until you clear it, and it is not sent to us.

AI crawlers

When a known AI crawler such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot requests a page, we store the time, the page path without any query string, the crawler’s user agent, the name and type we give that crawler, the host name it asked for, and the IP address the request came from. We keep the IP address so a hit can be checked against the address ranges AI companies publish. We use these records to study how AI assistants find the site. Requests from ordinary browsers are not stored this way.

We keep the IP address for 6 months. After that, a daily job erases it from the record. The rest of the record stays, because we need the full history to see when each assistant first fetched each page.

Who receives the data

Vercel, Neon and, only if you agree, Google collect and store these measurements for us. Each has its own privacy policy.

Any of them may handle the data outside the UK and EU.

Your rights

Under UK and EU data protection law you may have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data an organisation holds about you, and to ask for it to be corrected or erased. You can also complain to your data protection authority. In the UK, that is the Information Commissioner’s Office.

To make a request, email privacy@redtapetravel.com. Say which page or crawler-log record it concerns, for example its date and IP address. We will reply.

You can withdraw your consent to Google Analytics yourself at any time, with the control in the Google Analytics section above.
